Chapter Nine
“Come on and indulge me, Emma. Let’s grab this opportunity. I have to go to Jaipur next week to a boring medical conference at one of the big hotels. You remember, Professor Higson and his talks on Malaria? I’m so sorry we won’t be able to meet up like we planned.”
I was still simmering with anger at Shankar’s impromptu appearance. He had taken me completely by surprise by turning up only a week later unannounced on the front steps of Langhousa. What’s more, he looked utterly stunning in a white linen suit and starched shirt, which perfectly offset his smouldering sexuality.
I felt a fierce stab of disappointment. “I see, so you’re deserting me.”
“Come along.” He kissed me, light feathery kisses across my face and neck. “Hardly deserting you. You know how these things are?”
“I ought to be angry with you. I told you not to come here,” I said.
Shankar leaned against the doorframe. “But, darling, you gave me the impression you wanted to know more about me and to see the other side of me away from the hospital and definitely away from the hotel, so here I am.” He glanced past me up the hall. “Besides, there’s no one to see me. It’s Anya’s day off and I was exceedingly careful. I brought the car and hid it down that trail leading to the jungle.”
I went to say something, but Shankar was already pushing past me.
“How do you know Anya’s not here? You haven’t been spying on me, have you?”
He grinned at me. “Good Lord, no. But Anya happens to know the maid at the Apsleys and the two of them go to the market on a Thursday.”
“And don’t tell me.” I pulled a face. “You know the Apsleys?”
“Why, yes of course, my sweet, I know a great many people.” He winked at me, pausing for a moment to push me up against a cabinet. “Now, look, I don’t want to keep having a sordid affair with you in some little hotel room, and since I adore you, this stage of getting to know one another’s inevitable, don’t you think?”
There was nowhere to escape to—not that I wanted to anyway. He nudged my legs apart and, rubbing the flimsy silk of my dress between his fingers, slid his one hand up to cup my breast. By now I couldn’t hide my reactions. I simply put my hand over his other one and pressed it harder between my legs. He bent to pick up the box lying at his feet by the door. “Actually, I’ve got a proposition for you.” I clung to him hungrily, his gaze drilling into mine. “I want to take you out to see the ruins of Shamir. There’s a shrine there.”
“Well, you know how to spring a surprise.” I led him into the parlour and he sat down beside me on the couch by the window, his warm thigh brushing against mine. After a while, he slipped his arm around my shoulders, drawing me
